How a 25-Year Organic Farm Launched Into Cannabis with Flourish

Honey Dog Farm has been working the soil in Columbia County, New York, since 1999.  Jim Chambers founded the farm on a biodynamic philosophy of nurturing the soil, water, and air as a single, interconnected system, and the farm earned USDA/NOFA NY organic certification in 2018. For more than two decades, the team grew vegetables, garlic, honey, and sunflowers, selling through a seasonal farm stand and at local farmers' markets in the Hudson Valley.

When New York opened cannabis licensing, the farm saw a natural extension of what they'd been doing all along — growing cleanly, with intention, in the hills where the Taconics and the Berkshires meet. Honey Dog Heaven was born as the farm's cannabis cultivation arm, and the team received an Adult-Use Conditional Cultivator license from the Office of Cannabis Management.

They now cultivate 11 strains ranging from Apple Fritter and Chemdawg to NYC Diesel, Blue Dream, and Durban Poison, and distribute flower and pre-rolls to dispensaries across New York, including locations in New York City.

The Challenge: Agricultural Expertise Doesn't Come with a Compliance Manual

Honey Dog Farm knew how to grow. What they didn't know was how to navigate a regulatory framework that had no parallel in traditional agriculture.

Cannabis cultivation in New York requires plant-level tracking, state-mandated reporting, chain-of-custody documentation, and compliance recordkeeping that go far beyond what is required for organic vegetables or honey. For a small, mission-driven farm team that prefers to be in the field, not behind screens, these requirements risked becoming an overwhelming administrative burden that would pull focus from the actual growing.

The farm didn't just need software. They needed someone to show them how the industry works.

What Flourish Delivered: Software and Industry Guidance

Honey Dog Heaven's engagement with Flourish went beyond a standard software implementation. Through Flourish's professional services offering, the farm received one-on-one consulting and coaching from industry professionals who understood both the regulatory landscape and the operational realities of a small cultivation operation.

Compliance workflows built around how the farm actually operates. Flourish's team didn't impose a generic template. They configured tracking, documentation, and reporting workflows that fit naturally into Honey Dog Heaven's existing processes as much as possible so that compliance became part of the daily rhythm rather than a separate administrative exercise.

One-on-one coaching on cannabis-specific operations. For a team entering a regulated industry for the first time, the learning curve isn't just about software. Flourish's professional services team walked Honey Dog Heaven through the operational fundamentals, ranging from plant tagging and batch tracking to harvest documentation and state reporting,  providing the industry knowledge that no amount of software tutorials can replace.

A system designed for growers, not data entry clerks. Honey Dog Heaven's team spends their days with the plants, not at desks. Flourish's platform is built for that reality and captures the compliance data the state requires without turning farmers into full-time administrators.

Metrc readiness as New York transitions. As the state moved to Metrc for track-and-trace, Honey Dog Heaven's workflows in Flourish are already structured for the transition. The compliance foundation they've built carried forward without starting over.

The Difference It Makes

Cannabis is the newest crop on a farm that's been growing since 1999, but it's also the most heavily regulated. Flourish gave Honey Dog Heaven the tools and the guidance to meet those requirements without abandoning the biodynamic, hands-on approach that defines everything they do. The farm entered cannabis the right way: compliant from day one, with the confidence that comes from having experienced industry professionals in their corner.
