FAQs about New York digital tags
Digital tags are unique 16-digit identifiers used to trace cannabis plants and products from seed to sale. These tags are essential for maintaining transparency and compliance within New York's regulatory framework.
Each tag is tied to your organization’s Unique Business Identifier (UBI) and is used to perform key actions within BioTrack’s seed-to-sale API, including:
Planting and propagation
Harvesting and curing
Conversions (e.g., flower to pre-rolls or extract)
Sublotting inventory (breaking down batches)
Creating QA samples
Each license type is given a free allotment of digital inventory tags:
$0.10 per tag
Digital tags are available for purchase in blocks of:
1,000
5,000
10,000
Purchasing tags is quick and straightforward. Here's how to do it:
Visit the Digital Tag portal: https://tags.ny.biotr.ac
Log in using your UBI credentials.
If you manage multiple licenses, select the appropriate UBI from the dropdown.
Click the “+ Purchase Tags” button on the top right.
Choose how many tags you want to purchase.
Enter your payment information and confirm.
Once approved, tags will be available in your account for use.

You’re planting 150 plants of Lemon Haze. Here’s how the tags add up:
150 tags to start your grow = $15.00
After harvest, you create dry flower, trim, and waste.
3 tags = $0.30
You sublot for a processor order:
1 tag for 1,500g of flower
1 tag for 700g of trim
$0.20
Total cost for this grow cycle: $15.50
You’ve received:
1,500g of flower
700g of trim
You use:
1,500g of flower → 1,200 pre-rolls = 1 tag ($0.10)
10 pre-rolls → QA sample = 1 tag ($0.10)
You sublot the remaining 1,190 into 24 cases = 24 tags ($2.40)
Tip: You can use one tag across multiple cases if desired. For example, if you're shipping 5 cases to a retailer, you only need one tag representing the split from the parent batch.
You also use:
700g of trim → extract → 60g of concentrate = 1 tag ($0.10)
That 60g makes 600 edible packs = 1 tag ($0.10)
QA sample of 5 packs = 1 tag ($0.10)
Sublot the rest into 12 cases = 12 tags ($1.20)
Total tag cost: $4.10
Q: Do I need tags for waste or destroyed product?
A: No. Waste disposal does not require new digital tags.
Q: Can I print the digital tags?
A: Yes. Digital tags can be printed.
Q: I forgot my password—how do I reset it?
A: Go to https://tags.ny.biotr.ac and click “Forgot your password?” You’ll receive an email to reset your credentials.
Note: Any time you reset your password, it will also update the password Flourish Software uses to connect to BioTrack. You must refresh it in your Flourish settings to maintain the connection.
Q: How do I add a new user to my license?
A: Follow the instructions below:
Log into the portal
Click on your Licensee Name
Go to the User tab and click Add User
Enter the new user's email
They’ll receive a confirmation email to verify access
Q: Do I need to purchase more tags before I run out?
A: Yes. The seed-to-sale API will not allow workflows to proceed (e.g., planting, conversions) unless your account has enough tags available. If you have more plants and packages active in Flourish than your free allotment, you must purchase more virtual tags from BioTrack before turning on the integration.
Q: Can I loan tags to another company?
A: No, digital tags are specific to the UBI.
Q: Is Flourish Software a Third-Party Seed-to-Sale Software Integrator to BioTrack's STS?
A: Yes, with over 100 New York cannabis operators as part of the Flourish Fam, We Sure Are.
