Metrc in Alaska 101
Metrc is the official statewide track-and-trace system for Alaska's medical and recreational cannabis programs. The state's Alcohol and Marijuana Control Office (AMCO) is established as a regulatory and quasi-judicial agency for the control of the cultivation, manufacture, and sale of marijuana in the state.
In 1998, Measure 8 was passed, legalizing medical cannabis for patients with a doctor's recommendation to possess up to one ounce of cannabis or grow six plants. In 2014, Measure 2 legalized adult-use cannabis in Alaska for adults 21 and over, allowing them to possess the same amount and cultivate six plants. This law, coming into effect in 2015, also introduced the sale of cannabis through state-licensed dispensaries, with the first opening in 2016. Alaska became the third state to fully legalize the use and sale of cannabis.
