Metrc in Alabama 101
In August 2022, the Alabama Medical Cannabis Commission (AMCC) awarded Metrc its track-and-trace contract for Alabama's statewide medical cannabis program.
Alabama's medical cannabis program began in May 2021 with Alabama Legislation passing Senate Bill 46, known as the "Darren Wesley 'Ato' Hall Compassion Act". On May 17, 2021, Governor Kay Ivey signed the medical cannabis bill into law. With this act, Alabama became the 37th state in the U.S. to permit medical marijuana, establishing an intrastate system for businesses to cultivate, process, test, transport, and sell medical cannabis products.
Starting from September 1, 2022, individuals have the option to submit license applications to the AMCC for either an integrated facility or for licenses specific to roles such as:
Cultivator
Processor
Secure transporter
State testing laboratory
Dispensary
In collaboration with the University of South Alabama, the AMCC began reviewing submitted applications. On December 1st, 2023, the AMCC awarded 20 medical cannabis business licenses. Approved Alabama cannabis license holders must implement and stay compliant with Metrc.
