Metrc in District of Columbia 101

Metrc is the official statewide track-and-trace system for District of Columbia's statewide cannabis programs. The Alcohol Beverage and Cannabis Administration (ABCA) oversees the regulation and control of alcoholic beverage sales and medical cannabis. It grants licenses, ensures adherence to laws, and provides educational initiatives regarding cannabis regulations. The ABC Board, independently oversees, administers, adjudicates, and enforces laws, licensing, and regulations related to alcohol and medical cannabis.

In 1998, medical cannabis was first approved by D.C. voters in 1998 through Initiative 59, although its implementation was delayed for over a decade due to Congressional intervention. The medical cannabis program officially began in 2010, allowing for the establishment of dispensaries and a system for patient registration.

In 2014, the move towards recreational marijuana legalization occurred with the passage of Initiative 71. This initiative legalized the possession of small amounts of marijuana for personal use for adults over 21 and permitted home cultivation. However, the sale of recreational cannabis remains illegal due to federal restrictions that prevent the D.C. government from regulating and establishing a commercial market.

Do I have to use Metrc in District of Columbia?

Yes. the ABCA requires all licensed cannabis businesses to register, utilize, and comply with Metrc's track and trace system.

How do I get Metrc training?

Metrc will provide training that is specific to the District of Columbia and its respective regulatory statutes. Please reach out to the ABCA for additional information.

Metrc operates as a web-based system, accessible exclusively through the internet with the simple prerequisites of an internet connection and a web browser. How does Metrc's trace-and-track system work?
