Metrc in Minnesota 101

Metrc is the official statewide track-and-trace system for Minnesota's statewide cannabis programs.

In May 2014, Minnesota launched its medical marijuana program, permitting cannabis for specific severe medical conditions under strict regulations. Despite its restrictive nature, the program expanded over time to include more qualifying conditions.

In early 2023, an adult-use bill was introduced. After legislative approval, Governor Walz signed HF 100 into law on May 30, 2023, making Minnesota is the 23rd state in the nation to legalize cannabis use for people 21 and older. Also,  the law created the Office of Cannabis Management (OCM), tasked with licensing cannabis and hemp businesses and overseeing a legal recreational market, as well as the existing medical cannabis and hemp-derived markets.

Approved Minnesota cannabis license holders will need to implement and stay compliant with Metrc.

Do I have to use Metrc in Minnesota?

All cannabis businesses licensed in Minnesota will be required to register with, use, and adhere to Metrc's track-and-trace system.

How do I get Metrc training?

Metrc will provide training that is specific to Minnesota and its respective regulatory statutes. Please reach out to the OCM for additional information.

Note: Metrc training is required as part of establishing compliance with their track-and-trace system. 

Am I required to purchase any additional hardware for Metrc compliance? 

Metrc operates as a web-based system, accessible exclusively through the internet with the simple prerequisites of an internet connection and a web browser. There is no need to download, install, or maintain any software nor purchase any additional hardware. You will have a wide choice of printers, as documented on our Supported Hardware page.

How does Metrc's trace-and-track system work?

Metrc uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) serialized single-use tags to trace cannabis plants, products, and packages throughout its lifecycle, including cultivation, processing, transportation, and sale.
