Cannabis Cultivation: New York Enterprise Greenhouse Operation
Challenge
Wessels Farms operates one of New York's largest greenhouse facilities. 300,000+ square feet of growing space across a 70-acre property in Otisville, NY. Transitioning this third-generation commercial greenhouse operation into cannabis cultivation required enterprise-grade plant tracking and compliance labeling that the team's prior California cannabis experience had not prepared them for. New York's state-issued RFID tags provide only a barcode and chip with no visible plant-level information, creating an operational gap that needed to be solved at scale.

How a Third-Generation Greenhouse Operation Runs Enterprise-Scale Cannabis Cultivation on Flourish
Wessels Farms didn't enter cannabis as a startup. The operation traces back to 1923, when Henry and Anna Wessels emigrated from Germany and eventually settled in Otisville, New York. Over three generations, the farm evolved from a lumber mill to a poultry operation to one of the region's largest wholesale greenhouse businesses growing bedding plants, hanging baskets, and ornamentals for garden centers across the Northeast.
The infrastructure they built is substantial. The Otisville property spans 70 acres with over 200,000 square feet of gutter-connected greenhouses, 100,000 square feet of ground-to-ground houses, six acres of irrigated outdoor fields, seven on-site wells, and backup diesel generators. When New York opened cannabis licensing, Wessels Farms had something most new cultivators don't: commercial-scale growing infrastructure already in place and decades of horticultural operations experience behind it.
With team members who brought cannabis cultivation experience from the California market, Wessels Farms received an Adult-Use Conditional Cultivator license and began operating as one of New York's larger cannabis cultivation facilities — focused on bulk flower production for wholesale distribution.

The Enterprise Challenge: Plant Tracking and Labeling at Scale
Wessels Farms' team brought cannabis cultivation experience from the California market, including familiarity with Metrc, which is the same track-and-trace system New York adopted. The compliance framework wasn't new. What was new was the scale of the organizational challenge.
Managing thousands of plants across more than 300,000 square feet of greenhouse space requires more than just tagging and reporting. It requires thoughtful grouping and organization of plant batches across growing areas, real-time visibility into what's happening in each section of the facility, and analytics that help the team make decisions about scheduling, yields, and resource allocation beyond satisfying regulators. New York's state-issued RFID tags compound this: they carry a barcode and chip but display no visible plant-level information, so the operation needs its own labeling layer to maintain day-to-day situational awareness across the facility.
Most cannabis software is built for operations a fraction of this size. Wessels needed a platform that could handle enterprise-scale plant grouping, provide facility-wide visibility across multiple greenhouse zones, and deliver the reporting depth their team and their finance consultants require to run the business.
On top of the cultivation tracking challenge, Wessels Farms' business model introduced a wrinkle that most cannabis software doesn't handle natively. As a bulk flower producer selling to processors and other licensed businesses, their deliveries often go to one destination while the invoice goes to another entity entirely. Standard invoicing workflows assume the recipient and the payer are the same. For Wessels, they're frequently not.
What Flourish Delivers for Wessels Farms
Plant-level tracking at enterprise scale. Flourish's Grow module provides the detailed, plant-level visibility that New York's compliance framework requires, tracking from propagation through harvest, across every greenhouse and growing area on the property. For an operation of Wessels' size, this means thousands of individual plant records maintained with the precision regulators expect, without requiring manual data entry at every stage.
Data-rich labels that supplement state RFID tags. Flourish generates compliant labels directly from the cultivation data in the system, printing critical plant information that the state's RFID tags don't display. This gives the cultivation team the visual reference they need for daily operations while ensuring every label ties back to a complete digital record.
Custom bill-to invoicing for B2B bulk sales. Flourish built a feature to support Wessels' specific business model: the ability to designate a separate "bill-to" entity on invoices when the delivery destination and the paying customer are different parties. This is a common pattern in wholesale and bulk flower operations, and Flourish's willingness to build for this use case reflects the kind of enterprise flexibility that off-the-shelf solutions can't provide.
Professional services configuration for New York compliance. Flourish's professional services team configured the system to match New York's regulatory requirements and Wessels' specific operational workflows to ensure that the compliance layer works with the scale of the operation rather than becoming a bottleneck.
The Difference It Makes
Wessels Farms has the kind of growing infrastructure that most cannabis companies can only dream about. Three generations of greenhouse expertise, hundreds of thousands of square feet under glass, and a water supply that rivals small municipalities. What they needed was software that could match that scale with the compliance precision New York demands. Flourish's Grow module provides the plant-level tracking and labeling backbone, while the custom bill-to invoicing reflects the enterprise-grade flexibility a wholesale operation requires.
