Metrc in South Dakota 101

Metrc is the official statewide track-and-trace system for South Dakota's medical cannabis program since 2021.

In 2020, South Dakota voters endorsed Initiated Measure 26, thereby legalizing medical marijuana for individuals with debilitating medical conditions upon certification by healthcare providers. This pivotal legislation entrusts the South Dakota Department of Health with the task of overseeing the program's regulations, which encompasses the registration of patients and the licensing of dispensaries and cultivation facilities.

Additionally, in 2020, voters approved Constitutional Amendment A, aiming to legalize recreational marijuana for adults over the age of 21. However, this measure encountered legal obstacles. A circuit court judge deemed the amendment unconstitutional in February 2021, a stance later affirmed by the South Dakota Supreme Court in November 2021, thus halting the legalization of recreational cannabis.

Approved South Dakota medical cannabis license holders will need to implement and stay compliant with Metrc.

Do I have to use Metrc in South Dakota?

All medical cannabis businesses licensed in South Dakota will be required to register with, use, and adhere to Metrc's track-and-trace system.

How does Metrc's trace-and-track system work?

Metrc uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) serialized single-use tags to trace cannabis plants, products, and packages throughout its lifecycle, including cultivation, processing, transportation, and sale.
