Metrc in Illinois 101

Since 2025, Metrc has served as the official statewide track-and-trace system for Illinois' cannabis program.

In May 2023, Illinois declared its decision to award its new cannabis track and trace government contract to Metrc from BioTrack. 

The Illinois Department of Agriculture is responsible for licensing and regulating adult-use cultivation centers, cannabis craft growers, cannabis infusers, cannabis transporters, and Community College Vocational Cannabis Pilot Programs. Meanwhile, the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation (IDFPR) manages the licensing and regulation of adult-use dispensaries.

In 2013, the Illinois General Assembly passed the Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Pilot Program Act (MCPP), legalizing medical cannabis under strict conditions. Governor Patrick Quinn signed this into law in August 2013, making Illinois the 20th state to legalize medical marijuana, effective January 1.

On May 31, 2019, Illinois took a further step by passing the Illinois Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act, legalizing recreational marijuana from January 1, 2020, signed into law by Governor J.B. Pritzker. This act positioned Illinois as the first state to legalize recreational cannabis sales through the legislature, making it the 11th state to permit recreational use. 

Approved Illinois cannabis license holders must implement and stay compliant with Metrc.

Do I have to use Metrc in Illinois? 

Yes. Yes. The Illinois requires all licensed cannabis businesses to register, utilize, and comply with Metrc's track and trace system.

The state has established rules that all cannabis producers, processors, and retailers are required to follow. All licensees are required to report activities related to the production, transportation and sale of marijuana on a daily basis as mandated by the state of Illinois.

How do I get Metrc training?

Metrc will provide training that is specific to the state of Illinois and its respective regulatory statutes.

Note: Metrc training is required as part of establishing compliance with their track-and-trace system.

Am I required to purchase any additional hardware for Metrc compliance? 

No. Metrc operates as a web-based system, accessible exclusively through the internet with the simple prerequisites of an internet connection and a web browser. There is no need to download, install, or maintain any software nor purchase any additional hardware.

How does Metrc's trace-and-track system work?
