Track-and-trace requirements in Washington 101

Washington currently does not have a government-mandated track-and-trace contract with a licensed third party. Initially, Washington State partnered with BioTrack for their government track-and-trace system but later developed the Cannabis Central Reporting System (CCRS) to better meet the specific needs of its state's cannabis industry.

Washington legalized medical marijuana in 1998 with the passage of Initiative 692, making it one of the first states to allow patients access to cannabis for medical purposes. This law permitted patients with certain qualifying conditions.

In 2012, Washington became one of the first two states, alongside Colorado, to legalize recreational cannabis for adults aged 21 and over with the passage of Initiative 502. This landmark legislation allowed for the establishment of a regulated cannabis market, including licensed cultivation, processing, and retail sales of cannabis. The Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board (WSLCB) is responsible for overseeing the recreational cannabis market, including licensing, regulation, and enforcement of cannabis laws within the state.
